Julia Gabriel Centre Speech Communication Arts Programme
(1½ hours weekly)
The Julia Gabriel Centre Speech Communication Arts programme has a long track record of over 30 years and enabled thousands of primary school-aged children to build their expressive speaking ability, presentation skills and interpersonal communication through drama, speech work and literacy activities. The programme encourages children to extend their imagination, exercise creative problem-solving and develop an awareness of the world around them.
Focusing on communication, conversation and discussion skills to build confidence, concentration and social expression, our early-primary students (ages 7 to 8) work towards Level 1 and Level 2 of Trinity College London’s Speech Communication Arts syllabus.
Older primary students (ages 9 to 12) are guided to master critical thinking skills and confidence to express ideas in formal and informal communication situations and work towards Levels 3 to 6 of the Trinity College London Speech Communication Arts syllabus, which focus on developing expressive communication and confidence in public speaking.
In the Julia Gabriel Centre Speech Communication Arts programme, students:
- Focus on communication, conversation and discussion skills.
- Develop ability to express ideas, needs and interests.
- Find solutions while building self-esteem.
- Widen and deepen reading and literacy skills through recording their responses to stories and drama activities in pictorial and written form.
Older children (ages 9 to 12) also:
- Develop critical thinking skills and confidence to express ideas in formal and informal communication situations.
- Master skills needed to read and perform literature expressively.
- Plan and deliver presentations.
- Critique and review books.
- Create, structure and narrate stories.
